The European AI Office was established within the European Commission as a central part of the EU framework for governing artificial intelligence. It supports the implementation of the AI Act, with a particular focus on general purpose artificial intelligence models.
The AI Office enforces the rules for general purpose artificial intelligence models and assists national competent authorities and other governance bodies. Under the AI Act, it may evaluate these models, request information and corrective measures from providers and impose sanctions where necessary[1].
AI Act Single Information Platform
To facilitate the transition to the new regulatory framework, the Commission has launched the AI Act Service Desk is also providing information and support for a smooth and effective implementation of the AI Act across the EU.
The Platform is part of the AI Act Service Desk, which has been launched as a central initiative to help stakeholders navigate the AI Act requirements. It serves as an accessible, up-to-date information hub offering clear guidance on the AI Act’s application.
The AI Act Explorer provides structured and searchable access to Regulation (EU) 2024/1689. Users can search by keyword or browse the AI Act by chapter, article, recital and annex. The tool helps users locate provisions concerning the scope of the AI Act, prohibited practices, high risk AI systems, obligations of providers and deployers, transparency requirements, general purpose AI models, governance, enforcement, penalties and application dates.
The Compliance Checker is an interactive tool that helps organisations make an initial assessment of which AI Act requirements may apply to an AI system or general purpose AI model. On the basis of the information provided by the user, the tool helps identify the organisation’s possible role, such as provider, deployer or another operator, and the obligations that may be relevant. It can therefore support an initial assessment of the system’s regulatory status and the steps that may be required for compliance.
The AI Act Service Desk provides stakeholders with a direct channel for submitting questions about the interpretation and application of the AI Act. Questions may concern, for example, the scope of the Regulation, the classification of an AI system, the role of an organisation, applicable obligations or implementation deadlines. Requests can be submitted in any official EU language through an online form. Users must sign in with an EU Login account, complete the form and submit their question. An acknowledgement is sent by email, and the response, including any subsequent communication, is also provided by email.
