450.4 million customer non-cash payments totalling 584.7 billion euro were made by Latvian payment service providers (credit institutions, electronic money institutions, payment institutions, credit unions, Latvijas Banka, and the Treasury) in the first half of 2025. This averages 2.5 million payments worth 3.2 billion euro per day.
The total volume and value of non-cash payments made by customers in the first half of 2025 increased by 6% and 18% respectively in comparison with the first half of 2024.
During the first half of 2025, the majority of all payments were still made by payment cards; however, both card payments and credit transfers increased. Credit transfers account for the greatest increase in the total value of payments, while card payments record a larger increase in terms of volume.
The volume and the value of credit transfers, excluding intrabank payments, reached 53.6 million payments totalling 75.1 billion euro (increases of 9% and 6% respectively).
As in previous years, the most popular customer non-cash payments were card payments and customer credit transfers amounting to 60.2% and 36.7% of the total volume of non-cash payments respectively. The use of e-money also saw some growth, accounting for 3.1% of the total volume of payments.
To ensure card payments, 2.2 million payment cards had been issued by Latvian payment service providers by the end of the first half of 2025 (1.2 cards per capita on average).
Residents had access to 57.3 thousand point-of-sale (POS) terminals, 865 ATMs in Latvia, as well as 7 ATMs operated by Latvian payment service providers abroad. At the end of the first half of 2025, the number of customer payment accounts opened by Latvian payment service providers totalled 3.2 million or 1.7 payment accounts per capita on average.
