Latvijas Banka is releasing a special design collector coin "Upward" on Tuesday, 1 November.

1 November 2022 marks the 100th anniversary of the establishment of Latvijas Banka. "Upward" is a present to society at large on this special date. It invites and pushes us upward and strives upward itself, highlighting Latvijas Banka's journey through the past and clearly pointing in its future direction. Understanding of the national central bank and its tasks has changed over the past 100 years. Some of its functions belong to the past, but the primary task of Latvijas Banka remains unchanged: to ensure that the value of our money is retained and that the modern digital format of money also maintains its trustworthiness in public eyes.

For the attention of the media and interested parties:

The collector coin will be available for purchase only on the website e-monetas.lv from 12.00 (noon) on 1 November.
Mail delivery or personal pickup from Latvijas Banka Cashier's Offices at K. Valdemāra iela 1B, Riga will be possible.
To smooth out the customer flow on the premises, each customer will be notified of the date when the order becomes available for pickup at Latvijas Banka Cashier's Offices in the order confirmation. Orders will be available for pickup in a period of 20 business days starting from the date indicated in the order confirmation. There can be no changing of the starting date for the pickup period.

The authors of the graphic design of the "Upward" coin are artists Krista and Reinis Dzudzilo. The name of the coin in Latvian bears an association with an upward movement and a river. It also includes an allegory of overcoming gravity. A man also overcomes gravity when climbing upward or else he would never see the mountain top.

Collector coin upwards obverse and reverse

The obverse features nine steps with a smooth mirror surface set in relief, providing a glimpse of the eternal present and also the future which is man himself. A human life is a journey. The upper step is a gold-plated segment of a circle bearing an association with the edge of a rising sun and visually resembling the logotype of Latvijas Banka. The reverse is gold-plated and frosted. It shines in gold like a precious sun fountain or a serene gold surface of a lake ready to quench our thirst.

Starting from 12.00 (noon) on 1 November, the new coin will be on sale online via www.e-monetas.lv, Latvijas Banka's website for purchasing numismatic products. The price of the coin  is 78.00 euro; the purchase limit for one buyer will be 1 coin. The mintage of the coin is 5000. The coin has been struck by Lietuvos monetų kalykla (Lithuania).

The collector coin "Upward" is legal tender in the Republic of Latvia, yet the release of such coins in circulation is highly unlikely, as collector coins are in fact works of art and are in high demand among coin collectors and other interested parties.
