Press Release of March 22, 2000

The Bank of Latvia has issued a new silver collector coin, the second one within the international programme Sydney 2000. A motif of two athletes riding bicycles is featured in the centre of the 1-lats coin, thus honouring outstanding achievements by Latvian athletes at international competitions. Coin programmes that are dedicated to major sports events are extremely popular world wide, and, in addition to Latvia, 30 other countries are also participating in the programme Sydney 2000. The Bank of Latvia has dedicated two coins to the Olympic Games to be held in the year 2000 - last year we issued a gold 10-lats coin featuring the motif of a javelin thrower.

The new silver collector coin will be issued in 10 000 copies, and most of them will be distributed internationally. You can purchase this coin at the Bank of Latvia and other traditional places where collector coins are being sold, such as banks, souvenir and jewellery shops, and the Riga airport.
