The 2009 Annual Meeting of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank (WB) will be held in Istanbul on 6-7 October 2009. The meeting discusses issues of the world economy as well as assesses the performance of the IMF and WB and sets forth new tasks. Delegations of all IMF and WB member countries and international financial institutions take part in the meeting. Every year the meeting itself is the central event of this financial forum, accompanied by many institutional and bilateral meetings. Ilmārs Rimšēvičs, Governor of the Bank of Latvia and the Governor of the Republic of Latvia in the IMF, will be the head of the Latvian delegation.

In the forum, the Bank of Latvia has a comprehensive programme, and the Bank will be represented by the Governor of the Bank of Latvia as the head of the delegation, Andris Ruselis, Deputy Governor of the Bank of Latvia, Juris Kravalis, Head of the International Department, and Raivo Vanags, Head of the Market Operations Department.

Major events of the forum, attended or hosted by the Bank of Latvia

  • The Annual Meeting of the IMF and WB will begin at 10.00 on 6 October and proceed till 18.00 on 7 October. The forum programme events will start on 3 October.
  • The working programme for the Bank of Latvia will start on Saturday, 3 October, with the meeting of the IMF Nordic-Baltic Constituency on its opinion on operational issues of the IMF in the future. The Nordic-Baltic Constituency represents Latvia's interests in the IMF administration.
  • Meetings of the Economic and Financial Committee of the European Commission on issues of IMF cooperation as well as a meeting of the Committee with the IMF Committee on EU issues.
  • Representatives of the Bank of Latvia will have a meeting with Dominique Strauss-Kahn, the IMF Managing Director.
  • Ilmārs Rimšēvičs, Governor of the Bank of Latvia will participate and give a speech at the Conference of Investors of Developed Countries, with 60-80 institutional investors - banks, investment funds. etc. - as well as representatives of central banks and Ministries of Finance, and experts of the economy.
  • The Governor of the Bank of Latvia will hold a lunch for the central banks of the Baltic States to discuss problem issues of the economic development together.
  • Representatives of the Bank of Latvia will participate in the meeting of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, European Investment Bank and World Bank on the uniform action plan of the international financial institutions.
  • During the forum, representatives of the Bank of Latvia will have approximately ten bilateral meetings with investors, foreign reserve managers, financial institutions, inter alia with Nordic banks and the US Treasury.
  • During the forum, lunch, breakfast and similar events will be combined with business networking, presentations on the issues of the global economy and development of individual countries.

The Bank of Latvia represents Latvia at the meetings of the Governors of the International Monetary Fund and ensures daily cooperation, carried out by the International Department of the Bank.
The Governor of the Bank of Latvia is the Governor of the Republic of Latvia in the IMF; the State Secretary of the Ministry of Finance is the Alternate Governor of Latvia in the IMF.
The Minister of Finance of the Republic of Latvia is Latvia's Governor to the World Bank; the Minister of the Economy is the Alternate Governor.
