Latvian euro coins

The design of the reverse of the Latvian euro coins was chosen at the all-Latvian competition of ideas in 2004. The jury chose as the best the proposal sent in by Ilze Kalnina who suggested that the portrait of a Latvian folk maiden, the Freedom Monument and the coat of arms of the Republic of Latvia be depicted on the coins. For the Latvian euro coins the jury of the competition of ideas chose the images that symbolize Latvia and its core values - the love of Latvians for their native land, their quest for freedom and pride in their nation. This idea is also retained, although, not so broadly as planned, in the approved models.

The €2 coin features a Latvian folk maiden. This image was originally used on the silver 5 lats coin in 1929. The edge of the coin bears the inscription DIEVS * SVĒTĪ * LATVIJU (GOD BLESS LATVIA).

The 10, 20 and 50 cent coins shows the large coat of arms of the Republic of Latvia.

The 1, 2 and 5 cent coins shows the small coat of arms of the Republic of Latvia.

Following Latvia's changeover to the euro, along with the banknotes and coins in circulation, two types of the souvenir sets of Latvian euro coins in circulation intended to be used as a gift, collector's item as well as for the country's representation needs have also been produced.
