The Bank of Latvia determines the purchasing power of banknotes and coins in compliance with special regulations. All institutions, companies, firms and individuals in the Republic of Latvia are obliged to accept for payment and exchange banknotes and coins that do not raise any doubt as to their authenticity:
1) banknotes with a face value
of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 500 lats with fully preserved watermarks,
inscription of their face value and the Republic of Latvia's coat of
arms on the white edge of the banknote, full inscription "LATVIJAS
BANKAS NAUDASZIME", both numbers and the metallic thread;
2) metal coins with a face value of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 santims and
1 and 2 lats where the inscription of their nominal value, the coat of
arms and the edge inscription are fully preserved.
Banknotes and coins that are damaged as described below must also be accepted for payments and exchange without any restrictions:
1) slightly torn, pierced,
frayed and naturally worn and torn;
2) spotted, having inscriptions made in pencil and pen, with torn away
corners and fragments of the banknotes;
3) torn and glued banknotes where there are no doubts that both parts
belong to the same banknote;
4) deformed coins, coins having scratches, wears, breaks, cuts, spoiled
by acid or fire, as well as those that have turned black, insofar as it
possible to distinguish the coat of arms, the inscription of the coin's
face value and the edge inscription provided there are no doubts as
regards their authenticity.
Any banknote and coin having the above defects can be replaced at the Cashier's Office of the Bank of Latvia.
Should any banknote fail to meet said requirements, the Bank shall mark it "Exchange refused" and, upon request of the customer, return it to him or her (with the exception of forged banknotes). In special cases, experts committee will establish the purchasing power of currency based on the customer's application.
Banknotes with obviously malicious damage will be regarded as devoid of purchasing power and will not be accepted for payments and exchange.
