* With the aim of stabilising the foreign exchange market rather than guided by any commercial considerations, the Bank of Latvia on an everyday basis sells euro cash to natural persons. In case of market turmoil, the demand for foreign currency grows and the prices go up at commercial banks as well as currency exchange offices. In view of this, the exchange rate offered by the central bank for euro cash transactions, combined with the unlimited euro supply, act as a stabilising factor. As a rule, the currency exchange market in Latvia is tame, and the lats/euro exchange rate quoted by commercial banks and currency exchange offices (providing this as a standard service) tends to favour the buyer.
